What to Do Right Before Your Meet

ONE TO TWO HOURS BEFORE YOU COMPETE:

  • Any food you eat should be liquid, but don’t drink acidic citric juices.  Smoothies, blender drinks, sports gels might be OK if you’ve tried them in the past
  • Hydrate only with water unless it’s very hot and you’ve used sports drinks in these conditions
  • Don’t believe TV commercials that tell you a candy bar will help you this close to your event
  • Apply sunscreen, at least SPF 15 (higher is better), especially if you’re going to be out between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., even if it’s cloudy
  • Leave your sweats on and stay out of the sun!

LESS THAN ONE HOUR UNTIL YOU COMPETE:

  • Don’t eat even if you feel hungry, the food you eat now won’t do you any good, and instead it will be lying in your stomach diverting blood flow from your muscles where you need it!
  • If you feel nervous, drinking some water might help settle it down
  • Leave your sweats on and stay out of the sun!
